People go through fashion phases periodically throughout their entire lives. Once you get past the age where parents can stop choosing what clothes you’ll wear, we do a little experimentation with styles and combinations. Teens may have a goth phase, a punk phase, a retro phase, or a preppy phase. Then when we become full fledged adults and enter the workforce, our fashion sense undergoes another transformation. It’s funny what kind of trip down memory lane you’ll go on when you’re cleaning out your drawers and closets one day with the intention of donating clothes you don’t wear anymore.
Fashion is cyclical. It changes and returns like the seasons. Maybe slightly different than we remember, but still largely familiar. The ’90s was an interesting time for fashion with oversized jean jackets, long and flowy floral dresses, and neon bright colors. If people thought the ’80s had weird fashion tastes in that decade, they also forget that the ’90s had its fair share back in the day. Being a pre-teen for much of the ’90s, I did have some styles I absolutely adored or would probably never want to wear ever again from that period of my life. Surprisingly, the last few years has become the time for ’90s styles to make a resurgence on the fashion scene.
That fall feeling is in the air. The temperature starts feeling cooler, days grow shorter, and pumpkin spice fever has permeated local coffee shops and bakeries. We store away the flip flops and tank tops for flats and cozy sweaters. We begin ushering in a new season and adapt accordingly to the changes. But for some, it may be hard to let go of those pretty sleeveless or backless summer dresses for something more fall appropriate. The ladies who love their bright and colorful summer dresses want a chance to wear them out a little longer. How do you do that without the cool breeze nipping at your bare shoulders? Pair that summer dress with a stylish sweater or jacket. Here are my personal favorite cover-ups every lady who loves their summer dresses should have in their closet to be fall ready in a snap.
Fashion goes through cycles. One minute a trend is hot and the next minute it’s not. No style is ever really retired. It just takes a few years before a trend is announced the rage again by trendsetters and fashion editors. Despite what the trend may be for the season, some trends are timeless and can be worn season after season, year after year. Stripes are one of those classic styles that never seems to get stale.
The official start of the fall season is a few days away, September 22nd to be exact, but the big city I live in has already been getting a sneak preview of that autumn chill. Fall is one of my favorite seasons next to spring and I’m only too happy to stash away the summer clothes in favor of more season appropriate outfits. In preparation for the official arrival of the fall season, I’m going to list my go-to fall essentials I can never do without.
The older you get, the more you discover who you are and what your personal tastes are. This also translates into the type of clothes you like to wear. I naturally gravitate towards styles that are simple, feminine, and a bit dressed up. I’m a modest dresser who shies away from anything exposing too much of my body or skin to the public. A principle I have learned and adopted from my mom growing up is this, “Leave behind an air of mystery.” While some women are confidently showing off their hot bodies, I prefer to be covered in all the right places but showing a peak of skin when I want to feel a little sexy. The comeback of off the shoulder tops and dresses makes this spring and summer trend a huge personal style favorite for me.
Fashion trends in the last few years have been pretty lackluster for me. Going clothes shopping almost always had me leaving the stores empty handed. Nothing in the clothing racks really excited me or gave me an overwhelming sense of, “Buy me!” This has probably been a good thing for my closet space and wallet. With an upward trend and interest in more softer and feminine styles for the spring and summer seasons lately, I have a reason to get excited about shopping again and finding the clothes I really want to buy. The lace trend is the current addition to the ultra romantic and feminine looks I’ve been seeing making a comeback and I couldn’t be happier.
The best advice my mom has ever given to me when it comes to fashion and style is always keep a few items of clothing that aren’t necessarily classic styles in your closet. You’ll never know when something will be in fashion again. It’s a good thing this little piece of advice has stuck with me because one of my favorite fashion looks seem to be making a grand reappearance this spring––the bell sleeves.
Summer is here and all those warm days and nights make you long for beaches, ice cream, and destination getaways. With the heat comes people spending more time outside, eating at cute sidewalk cafes as they people watch, or a chance to flash a little more skin to keep yourself cooled off during those record high temperatures. A trend this summer for the ladies are the high waist skirts. Want to look cute and not have the clothes you wear stick to your skin? This trend is your answer and it’s one of my favorite ones to wear this summer.
