Video Game Review: Neo – The World Ends With You

Sequels to beloved video games can either be everything you hoped for and more, or it can barely hold a candle to the original game. Neo: The World Ends With You is the long anticipated followup to 2007’s The World Ends With You, which originally came out on the Nintendo DS. While there is plenty to love about the game, with an upgraded battle system, wider areas of Shibuya to explore, and a soundtrack that continues to stay on point, there’s also some weak spots that made playing the game frustrating at times.

The End? The Fake Ending In Video Games

Reaching the end of a video game can be exciting. After spending many hours with a story and characters, going on a journey and getting to know the characters until they start feeling like good friends, the end can feel bittersweet but hard earned to finally see how it all ends. As the anticipation builds toward the end, something happens in the game that pulls the rug from right under you. Maybe the end credits roll but you’re left flabbergasted, thinking, “That can’t be how it ends?!” or a chapter labeled as “Final” actually opens up a few more subchapters that eventually get you to the real ending of the game.

This has been my recent experience with two video games in particular—Control and Neo: The World Ends With You. Fair warning, there are some light spoilers for both of these games.

November Update: What I’ve Been Playing, Reading, And Watching

As the weather gets increasingly chillier, at least from where I am, many of us are opting to stay inside and curl up with a good video game, book, or show. While the end of 2021 isn’t quite here yet, here are some of what I’m hoping to have finished before the year is out.

Video Game Soundtracks I Can’t Get Enough Of

Music creates an emotional response within us that can evoke strong memories if it leaves a lasting impression on us. Whenever I hear the video game soundtrack of a game I thoroughly enjoyed or it has moved me beyond measure, I can easily recall favorite moments from the video game or it stirs up certain emotions I have felt towards the characters and story.

Much of 2021 has been a pretty good year for video games, especially as far as having a bit of a completed list of games under my belt, which has led to the discovery of soundtracks I can’t stop rotating between on Spotify. Here are my favorite video game soundtracks of the year.

First Few Hours With Neo: The World Ends With You

Of all the video games to come out of the 2021 season Neo: The World Ends With You is by far the highest on my list of games I’ve been looking forward to play. Now that the game is fully released, I have spent a good many hours diving back into Shibuya and the Reapers’ Game.

August Update: What I’ve Been Playing, Reading, and Watching

As the summer season starts to wind down, many of us have been trying to make the most of it by getting away for a bit or meeting up with loved ones we haven’t seen in a while. Despite the past few months being a bit busier for me than it has been in a long time, I’ve been keeping up with some of my usual hobbies when I’m home. Here’s a look at what I have been spending my time on.

A Promising Sneak Peek: Neo – The World Ends With You Demo

When I know there’s a video game I’ll want to play I rarely bother with the demo. The purpose of a demo is to sample a game you’re potentially interested in but not quite sure if you should get. But in the case of Square Enix’s upcoming Neo: The World Ends With You, the sequel to 2007’s The World Ends With You, it was too good of an opportunity to pass on getting an earlier feel of the game. From what I’ve experienced so far I’m now more than ever eager to continue playing it.

Looking Ahead: Most Anticipated Video Games Of The Summer Season

When it comes to upcoming video game releases there isn’t a lot I would buy for pre-order or on Day 1. Usually I’m very selective about what I’m willing to buy, or I’ll wait until a big games sale happens during the holiday season. But when there are games I simply have to have, one of those reasons could be because it’s a sequel to a beloved game I already played and enjoyed. There are at least two I have my eyes on for next month.
