A few weekends ago I was talking to my cousin and the topic of video games came up. Out of the blue, he threw out this question to me—what video games would you come back to again and again? After all the games I have played since the time I became a gamer, a small but growing list of games has become obvious replays for me, if I weren’t going through the backlog of games I have accumulated.

Honoring The Video Games I Love Through Fashion

If I could define my personal, day-to-day style it would be simple, classic, and subtle. I wouldn’t consider myself the “obvious geek” who would wear graphic tees that boldly display the name of a video game or character’s face on it. I usually prefer wearing fashion that pays tribute to the geeky things I love in more low-key ways.

In recent years I have been on the lookout for clothes that are casual and comfortable but stylish at the same time. Because of the ongoing pandemic there has been a rise in lounge wear and clothes that are far more dressed down than pre-COVID times. While I have been opting for more T-shirts and hoodies lately, I’m always looking for geek wear that continues to be less overt about game or anime references I absolutely love.

Comfort In Troubling Times: Video Games To Get Lost In

No matter what part of the world you’re living in we can all collectively agree that the times we’re in now are filled with uncertainty, upheaval, and malcontent. It’s a constant struggle to stay hopeful and optimistic when the barrage of breaking news stories serve to make us even more cynical about the direction humanity is headed in. While it’s easier to sit back and continue to watch the world burn all around us, I take comfort in knowing that there are still some safe spaces left to retreat to when everything gets too overwhelming. In times like these I go back to the video games that offer me some escape.

Look Who’s Coming To Dinner: Video Game Characters I Would Want To Have Over On Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to get together, share a meal, and reflect on what we’re most thankful for in our lives. What I love about this holiday is the opportunity to spend time with those we love and care about the most and eating until our stomachs can barely make room for a slice of some good ‘ol pumpkin pie. Big gatherings, like the ones we have on Thanksgiving, often needs a person or two who can liven things up. Thinking of some of the video game characters who have made the biggest impression on me, I couldn’t resist picking who I would want to have at my Thanksgiving feast if it were possible. Two characters from my favorite video game series of all time immediately came to mind—Varric and Iron Bull of Dragon Age.

Geek Fashion: Going Beyond The Typical Graphic T-Shirts

I don’t proclaim myself to be a fashion expert, but I have an appreciation for well put together styles, color combinations, and tasteful accessorizing. Everyone’s personal style will be different and we all have our own idea of what fashion means to us. It’s a form of creative expression and the first impression we get when we meet someone. I have mentioned it many times before that while I’m a geek at heart, my fashion choices don’t outwardly show my geeky enthusiasm. I may admire a Lara Croft T-shirt worn by a friend, but I won’t wear one myself. I may think a piece of geeky jewelry looks cool, but still not feel compelled to wear them with my clothes. My style is simple, classic, and extremely feminine with dashes of floral prints paired with comfy leather boots. When Bioware hosted a fashion show at this year’s PAX Prime in Seattle to reveal a new line of geek clothes, I fell in love at first sight.

Video Game Fatigue: Can You Really Have Too Much Of A Good Thing?

There’s always that one video game or series you’ll love and cherish until the end of your days. To have and to hold, in sickness and in health––you get the idea. When a game has more story left to tell, like RPGs, the current trend in video games is to release DLC. Regardless of what your feelings are with this business practice, if you love the game enough you’ll most likely drop down the money to extend your gaming experience with a game you love. But what happens when you’re halfway into a DLC you purchased and you can’t bring yourself to finish it? Does this mean you’ve fallen out of love with the video game? Not exactly, but it may indicate your game has made you too tired to play it.

It’s All In The Details: Video Game Codexes

A key component in video games or any kind of media we enjoy to partake in begins with a writer and a story. The characters and the world they exist in wouldn’t be possible without one person or a team of people in the writer’s room brainstorming and building the kind of stories they wish to see. In order for a story to have life, you’ll need to know the history of the world you’re creating, the personal struggles and triumphs of your characters, or the current issues concerning their world. Playing video games tend to reveal most of what you need to know as you experience the game. The rest that isn’t central to the story often wind up in a game codex.

DAI Inquisitor’s Log: Orlesian Politics, Inner Circle Quests, & Kicking Back At Skyhold

One of the first things I do whenever I continue my current game of Dragon Age: Inquisition is to take a mental note of where my progress is at. I go over everything in my mission log with a fine tooth comb type of precision and I also bring out the game guide to aid me in my endeavors to get the most out of my game. I’ve already made peace with the fact that my first run with the game won’t be perfect, as some side quests have slipped through the cracks either by my own error or unavoidable glitches, but nearly perfect is still good enough for me.

DAI Inquisitor’s Log: Slaying Dragons, Shard Collecting Nightmares, & Missed Side Missions?

Happy New Year, everyone! I decided to kick off my first post of the new year by doing another Dragon Age: Inquisition log. You may have noticed that I have not done an end of the year report in December, like I’d usually do with my video game challenges, but the holidays are a crazy time and I wanted to end 2014 with a reflection post. You’ll get the usual report at the end of January.

The holidays have been the perfect time to plug away at DAI and I have a lot to say about my now 100+ hours with the game. This time, there won’t be any spoilers after the cut, as I know some of you may be avoiding my other DAI logs I’ve written. Rest assured, this one is safe to read for those still playing the game, no matter how many hours you have currently logged in or where you are in the game.

DAI Inquisitor’s Log: Story, Exploration, & Glitches

Dragon Age: Inquisition isn’t quite a month old yet, but I have been diligently plugging away hours into my first run with the game. There’s so much to do and not enough time in the day to get to it all. The rare and fortunate times I’ve had to myself on weekends to marathon the game hasn’t been close to putting a dent in the game. In spite of feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of areas and side missions to explore and do, I’ve made some small successes in moving the story forward. Fair warning, there will be some spoilers ahead after the cut. Read at your own discretion.
