Driving in Video Games Redux: The Frustration Of Flying in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

The past few months have been a busy one. A lot has been going on for me personally, leaving not as much time as I like to game for long hours over the weekend. But when I do find time, I have been slowly getting through Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as I mentioned in a past post. While the game has been a blast to play, the story and character development continuing to build in exciting ways, one thing I hate doing in the game is flying the Milano as Peter Quill.

My gripe with driving (or flying in this case) in video games goes way back. Any time I have to take control of a car or aircraft is met with rage and sobbing. I hate driving in games. This feeling hasn’t changed and probably never will.

There’s always something about it that never feels smooth in the same way real life driving is, or maybe I suck at controlling any type of vehicle in a game. Maybe the only exception to this is riding a motorcycle, which I really enjoyed doing in Cyberpunk 2077. But cars, planes, or spacecrafts? Nope. I want less of that. Imagine my dismay when I realized there are points in Guardians where flying is an objective I have to complete.

A few chapters had moments where you as Peter had to escape capture, blast enemies chasing after you while avoiding their attacks, or safely crash land the Milano. Thankfully, these instances only happen sparingly but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating to get through them. Out of the three I have mentioned, only one of them has proven easy to do in one go while the rest took several tries before I finally completed the flying objective for that chapter.

Sometimes it took me an hour to try to get through the flying part. Another time it took taking a break from the game for a few hours, going back to it, and then being able to complete the objective by the skin of my teeth. Anytime controlling the Milano was involved in Guardians, I was not having fun. Not one bit.

Despite my issues with the flying parts of Guardians, it has been an enjoyable game overall. I’m a few chapters away from finishing it, and as I get closer to the end, I’m really really hoping I’ve experienced the last of flying the Milano. Pray for me.

Have there been video games you played where the driving was downright annoying?

  1. While I wouldn’t say I *like* driving in games, I definitely like it more than flying! You put me in the air in any capacity, from gliding as Batman to flying a stolen helicopter in GTA to maneuvering the Gummy Ship in Kingdom Hearts, and it is THE WORST! I can never properly manage flight controls in any game requiring such, so it’s always met with dread and can take me hours to complete. Not. Fun. At. All.

    1. Haha, I’m with you there! If I really had to choose the lesser evil in this scenario it would be driving over flying. At least with driving I can get through that part somewhat quickly. Flying not so much. We can probably agree that the controls for driving any vehicle are really super awkward and clunky.
