Now Switch: Welcoming The Nintendo Switch To My Console Family

The decision to buy a brand new console is one most wouldn’t take lightly. It’s a bit of a commitment on your time and wallet. But once the decision has been made to purchase one of the consoles of your choice, you’ll be so glad you did. The Nintendo Switch is the most recent console to join my lineup of game systems.

I’m not typically a Day 1 adopter of new consoles when they come out. I’m more likely to be sitting on the fence and waiting a little longer to see if upgrading to a new system will be worth my while. I skipped out on getting the Wii U when it was the hot console for Nintendo at the time and I don’t regret that decision. Not many games of interest came out for that system and the Wii U has been put to rest in the same way the original Wii was.

When the Nintendo Switch debuted back in March 2017, it was an impressive display of what this console could do. A system that could act as both a plug to the TV console and a handheld portable, depending on what your gaming needs might be? It sounded ingenious but it wasn’t enough to jump on board just yet. There needed to be a substantial amount of games on the Switch for me to justify the purchase. Even with Mario Odyssey, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Overcooked among the many games being added to the Switch’s game library, the one game that finally made me want to own the Switch was the remaster of The World Ends With You. Patience and a good Black Friday deal finally awarded me my very own Switch.

Hello you sexy thing!

One of the first things that struck me about this console when I took it out of the box was how small and light the Switch was. The Xbox One and the Playstation 4 tend to be bulkier and require more space to rest comfortably in your living room or bedroom. The Switch barely takes up half the space on my entertainment system, which still leaves plenty of room for my old school Wii and Xbox 360 to keep their original spots that they have been occupying for the last few years. Installation and setup was more or less simple and painless, although, it still would have been nice to have one of those single fold out setup diagrams come with the box.

I was extremely glad to have taken advantage of the special Switch and Mario Kart 8 bundle during Black Friday sales. What’s the fun in owning a new console when you don’t have a game to play it on?

While I’ve lately taken to playing NieR: Automata on the Xbox One, I couldn’t resist showing some love to my Nintendo Switch by getting in a quick game of Mario Kart or two. It’s the same fun racing game filled with challenging obstacles, opportunities to steal the number 1 spot from your opponents, and fun courses to drive on. I’ve only managed to play the game using the Switch as a handheld, but with the Joy-Con controllers being a part of the console itself and easily detachable to let others join in on the fun, I can’t wait to have some people over to have a multi-player session with them.

The Nintendo Switch is slowly becoming my new favorite console and I’m excited to add a whole new set of games to go with it. My bank account and backlog will weep, but the gamer in me is doing a jig to call the Switch another member of my console family.

Do you own a Nintendo Switch? What are some of your favorite games to play on it?

    1. Thanks! And Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those games I’ve been wanting to play in forever. I gotta change that sometime soon. 😀 Thanks for the recommendations.

  1. Switch surprised me too. I’ve been doing a lot more traveling lately, so it’s really awesome to be able to play console-level games on the go. I also like using it as an indie game machine. Indie games are smaller, so I don’t really spend time on them when I’m playing at home. With the Switch though, I’m finding myself much more willing to give stuff like Undertale and Celeste a try. (Celeste is absolutely wonderful btw. Definitely get that on your Switch if you enjoy puzzle/ platformers and heartwarming stories.) 😀

    1. That’s another thing I’m noticing too. A lot of indies seem to be coming to the Switch, which is great for me as a lot of indies start off on the PC first before making their way to the consoles. A friend of mine has been telling me I need to play Undertale. That’s on my list of games I’ll eventually buy for the Switch. I never heard of Celeste, but I’ll definitely check that one out too! 🙂

  2. The Nintendo Switch is one of my favorite systems in years. The versatility of it is great and the ever growing library is incredibly impressive. Unfortunately it wont be great for the larger 3rd party titles that see release on PS & Xbox, but the quality of Nintendo games cannot be overlooked nor the staggering amount of indie games that are being released for it. If a game is multiplatform, I now heavily lean towards purchasing it on the Switch where I have a choice of either playing on my tv or while out and about.

Must Play Switch Games: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Stardew Valley, Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Steamworld Dig 2

    1. The versatility of the Switch is definitely a big winner for me too. Whether playing it on the TV or as a handheld, the games look great on it. At least when I played Mario Kart 8. Smash Bros, Odyssey, and Breath of the Wild are already on my list of games to purchase. I’ll certainly look into the other ones you recommended. Thanks so much!

  3. Yay! Switch is awesome.

So far I’ve enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Xenoblade is my favourite series tho so no surprises there!) and Breath of the Wild. Arms is a cool new spin on the fighting game genre and I also really like Voez (a rhythm action game that uses the touch screen).

    Enjoy 🙂

    1. I’ve been getting a few people recommending Arms to me too. Seems like there are plenty of games to pad out my Switch library nicely! 🙂 I’m not familiar with Voez, but I do enjoy the occasional rhythm game or two. Thanks for the suggestions!

  4. Congratz, I’m playing Breath of the Wild, Bayonetta 2 and Valkyrie Chronicles 4. Like you I waited and now we’re spoiled for choice. Hope you have lots of fun! 😁
