This was something I spent most of today thinking about, “What else is good to read aside from what I already know and like?” Then I decided I wanted to throw this question out there in the blogosphere, “What are you currently reading?”
Not everyone is a manga fan and not everyone is a comic book fan. Or maybe you are one of those people who like both! Either way, I want to know what you are reading. You can be reading a little of everything or one series only. Doesn’t matter. What does matter is what series or standalone story in manga or comics are you currently loving right now? What about it made you want to read it in the first place?
This is more of a discussion entry today. In general, I want to know what other people’s interests are. I definitely love reading comics aside from the usual manga stuff. I just don’t collect comics enough. If you are a non-manga fan, but love comics from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, etc. then drop me a line in the comments section. Like my page on Facebook and tell me there. If you are on Twitter, tweet me your responses @simpleekgrl. Whatever your social media of choice, I want to hear from YOU!
To answer my own question, I’m reading a little of everything. The series that does stick with me at the moment would have to be Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle by CLAMP. Why did I pick up this series? I was drawn to the artwork, and Reservoir Chronicle had Syaoran and Sakura of Cardcaptor Sakura as the main characters. Hell, it’s a whole new story with a lot of recognizable characters from other CLAMP works thrown into this alternate universe story.
I never had a chance to read CLAMP’s other catalog of work beyond CCS and Tsubasa, but I did like how they decided to incorporate the characters they created from previous works to make a whole new story.
And there you have it! Please answer the question and let’s get a discussion going.
I have the complete set of CCS, Tsubasa Chronicles and XXX-Holic. They are intertwined you know. Right now, I’m loving shoujo romance type. I’m obssessing on Skip Beat ( my user name , you know? ), LDK, Goong, Kokoro Botan, The One …. actually , tons of romance mangas ! LOL
Wow, I need to eventually buy xxxHolic. There are just so many mangas I want. It’s crazy! I got your Skip Beat reference immediately from your user name. Love Skip Beat. It’s so funny too. I have a few volumes of Skip Beat at home, but I put collecting that on hold to try and finish older series like Ceres:Celestial Legend and Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers). I’m nearly done collecting Ceres, but Boys Over Flowers will take some time. lol
I’m really behind in reading manga. The first series I started reading was Attack on Titan, which I adore and really enjoy. I read some of the Attack on Titan spin-offs, even though none of them were amazing. I’ve also read some volumes of the Phoenix Wright manga, which aren’t as good as the games but are still pretty entertaining regardless. I started the Fullmetal Alchemist manga a while back, and I’d like to finish that one of these days for completion’s sake. So I’ve read a few, but I’d love to find others as well. What would you recommend?
I was always curious about the Phoenix Wright manga, but never bothered to read them because I figured it might not measure up to the games at all. Good to know I’m not missing much. There’s just so much manga I wish to get into like Fullmetal Alchemist because I enjoyed the first anime series a lot, but I haven’t seen Brotherhood yet! I hope to remedy that at some point.
As for recommendations, I’m not sure how interested you’d be in reading shojo manga? It’s what I read mostly, but then again, I haven’t picked up a new series in ages and I’d like to read other stuff beyond shojo. I also think shojo manga isn’t all that good these days either, aside from the series I’m still currently collecting.
If you aren’t into a ton of romance in your manga, I’d recommend reading Ouran High School Host Club by Bisco Hatori. It has a ton of humor, focuses more on friendship between the characters, and I like how they subvert the usual gender stereotypes and cliches you’d expect. The romance doesn’t really start kicking in until much later in the series. I really like Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle by CLAMP. I’m having a hard time finishing the anime based on the series, but I personally think the manga is ten times better anyway. There’s a nice balance of action, adventure, drama, and romance in this series.
And if you have an interest in another CLAMP title, you should also read Cardcaptor Sakura. It’s one of my all time favorite mangas next to Sailor Moon. I find all the characters really charming, super cute, and the journey of collecting the Clow Cards really engaging. My main reason for picking up Tsubasa is because it places Sakura and Syaoran in an alternate universe type of story, even though Cardcaptor Sakura has no relation to Tsubasa at all other than the characters.
Oh yes, Brotherhood is amazing! You should definitely watch it, especially since it’s very loyal to the manga. 😀
Thanks for sending me some recommendations! I think I’m going to try out the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I like the idea of cross-overs with characters, so I’ll let you know what my thoughts are as I get farther along!
I’ve been told that Brotherhood does follow the manga much more closely and is even better than the first anime series they originally made. I’m excited to watch it…when I find the time of course!
You’re very welcome! I wish I had more to recommend, but I’m pretty behind on my manga reading and collecting in general. I also didn’t want to recommend anything that’s too romantic and sappy if that’s not your thing. I really do hope you enjoy Tsubasa and definitely do let me know what you think. If it turns out you hated it or find it boring, you can still tell me anyway! I do think this one is a good one and it does a ton of crossovers with other CLAMP characters from other well known mangas they’ve done in the past.
